Hello everyone,
I'm compiling a list of (unofficial) live recordings of the WASO quartet. Their influence on Gypsy Swing post-Django is tremendous but there aren't that many recordings available compared to other great artists.
I love these old live recordings as they contain such a strong energy, creative arrangements, great rhythm by Vivi and Michel, incredibly amazing Fapy solos and beautiful and strong playing by my Grandfather. They also feature many quite funny song introductions by him haha. Some of these recordings even include some great non-Gypsy Swing repertoire; traditional Romani and Hungarian songs, which I absolutely love.
If anyone ever finds any recordings of WASO: I'd love to hear them!
Here's a great recording from 1977; where they opened for Tom Waits!

Here a fun recording of 'Some of these Days' from a concert at North Sea Jazz Festival:
Here some recordings from the 80s by Tony Green;
Here is a really nice recording by Bert Smits of the WASO quintet; which featured Denis Vereecken on drums and rhythm guitar; a youth friend of Fapy, Vivi, Michel and my Grandfather. He sadly passed away a few years back.
Three very nice Romani songs, introduced by Vivi!
This one has been posted here before but it's definitely one of my favorite recordings of WASO ever;
It features some nice swinging tunes, a few songs where Fapy plays violin and my Grandfather lead guitar, a beautiful Hungarian suite with Vivi on piano, of course some Romani tunes including a crazy version of 'Dui Dui', and probably the most energetic version of 'Les Yeux Noirs' ever recorded, haha!
Thank you so much, Tony Rees, for uploading this wonderful recording!
This recording is right after Fapy left WASO, when Storro played with them for a very short while. Some wonderful trumpet playing, beautiful guitar phrases by my Grandfather and fun matching outfits!
A very obscure recording here, featuring the wonderful Joop Ayal who passed away, sadly enough.
Joop Ayal plays very modern and at some times that contrast works amazingly. He played so strong despite being 61 years old at the time of this recording. I love his playing on tenor sax (I have his gig bag at home!) and it's also very nice to hear gypsy swing with flute.
Vivi is in such great shape here and the star of the show for me; he has such a strong 'pompe', such an energy on fast songs and a beautiful and unique voice.
Some highlights:
A beautiful flamenco solo of my Grandfather around 26:30.
A wonderful version of 'Dui Dui' with a long traditional intro at around 40:00, at around 42:45 a guy in the audience goes totally crazy haha
A great 'Sweet Georgia Brown' at around 1:00:30 with a nice bass solo by Michel with Vivi backing him wonderfully.
A beautiful rendition of 'Body and Soul' with a wonderful solo intro by Joop Ayal at around 1:17:00.
And last but not least at around 1:45:00, a great version of 'Les Yeux Noirs' with some great breaks and solos.
I still have recordings of the original WASO quartet live in London, in England with Bill Greenow on reeds and my Grandfather on guitar, and a later recording in England with the formation of 'Si jamais tu t' ennuies' with my Grandfather on lead guitar and soprano saxophone, the incredible Dick Van Der Harst on bandoneon, Dominique Pierrard on rhythm guitar and Jo Van Houtte on double bass. I'll try and upload them soon!
Thank you so much for sharing this archive, without the influence of this band during the early 80's, I would not be playing and enjoying the life I have now. Also, Fapy and I have become friends over the last 10 years and continues to have a massive influence. Thanks again for the memories. Will
These are a treasure, thank you. I want to hear all but will be probably have to pick and choose.
