FS: Ibanez MAC 10 signed s/no 041

1980 Ibanez MAC 10 guitar. S/No 041. Signed by Mario Maccaferri. This was my late father’s pride and joy and was bought by him from Frets music in Southampton, UK around 1985.

Completely original condition and has clearly been enjoyed and is not in mint condition, but is a good honest instrument with no structural damage and has had no work done to it.

I've done my best to show some of the patination/dings. Mainly on the top and the back of the neck.

Sounds stunning and is perfectly playable as it is, but any purchaser may want to refurbish the tailpiece and bridge/saddle. The wooden insert for the tailpiece is long gone, I’m afraid, as is, rather bafflingly, the original case - although this was a very nondescript item and should be easy enough to replace.

Research suggests £2k seems a realistic place to start, although you are welcome to make an offer.

Collection only from near Maidstone, Kent, UK.

I've read that 440 MAC10s were made (1979-1983), so 041 dated 1980 would have been an early-ish production.

There's some backstory on that interesting historical development here: https://www.djangobooks.com/Item/csl-maccaferri

    Notable:

    • no zero fret
    • 9th fret dot, 12th fret to the body
    • truss rod adjustment is in the headstock

This is really a very fair price for such a nice and significant instrument. Years ago when I started in the genre, early 2000s, I saw a d-hole guitar in the store for what I thought was $200. I was super excited. It was in a bad shape but I thought at that price I could do the work and make it playable. Only for the salesguy to point out it's $2,000. Then he told me about the story that Wim linked above, which surprisingly he knew about that collaboration. He also agreed that $2K is way too much for a basically unplayable guitar.

Also note the V neck headstock joint.
