Many videos of them on Youtube. I've been entertained :^)
Does anyone recognize the tunes at the beginning and at 1:16?
What genre would you call them, and what groups play these styles?
Thanks. I like the music and can imagine 1940s jam sessions with
a similar mix & sound. Pretty amazing really. Of course I want to hear a lead
guitarist... --Joel

The first few seconds of the clip are finishing the tune "Moscow Nights", a traditional Russian tune. Not sure about 1:16.
Thanks Billyshakes
[ “Moscow Nights” is in the Djangofakebook pdf as “Midnight in Moscow” ]
Yup. Kenny Ball recorded the song under that name, and probably made it famous to Western ears.
Composed by Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi:
German Wikipedia mentions dutch band Jan Burgers And His New Orleans syncopators who recorded 1960:
Interesting choices because vechera is really evening, and night is noch or however you'd approximate cyrillic in latin
I also understand that "Podmoscovnie" means "the area around Moscow" or "the suburbs of Moscow" or a sentiment to that effect (never got that far in learning Russian). Translation, like antiquing guitars, is more an art than a science.
Joel asked what "genre" they are- I could say close to Gypsy Jazz, but they're really missing a guitar pompe-ing a straight four in the bar. I like them a lot, though.
