I can't believe Kamasi Washington is playing at the festival, that's really cool! He put out one of my favorite jazz albums of the past year. https://youtu.be/0YbPSIXQ4q4

No need to buy a ticket.

  • Maybe they should add Snarky Puppy too. Switch the name to the Samois Jazz Festival.

Thursday looks good. The pull of Samoreau might be too strong the other days though .... %-(

Oh how we like to forget about Django after the mid 1940's.

MONSIEUR PERINÉ at Samois. I like this band and their charismatic singer Catalina García, but am curious about the booking at the major Django festival in the world. I especially enjoyed their NPR Tiny Desk concert and have been thinking of seeing them in San Francisco in a few weeks. It seems about 50% of bookings aren't really related to Django's style. Are visitors disappointed or does one enjoy the diverse booking since there are great players jamming around the campgrounds, etc.?
  • Is the Samois festival supposed to be a GJ festival or a jazz guitar festival or what.

From a distance it looks like they aren't sure themselves.

    From last year's mission statement:

"Because fashion will soon be out of fashion, and three beats ahead is better than three beats behind, why not stop running and bet on our imagination instead? In 2014, we single-mindedly zoomed in on our musical roots, but 2015 will daringly branch out on every imaginable combination of musical innovations.

First, we have dreamt up a beautiful, masterly and ambitious creation centred on Django Reinhardt. Yes, we have dreamt what no one had dared dream before: offer Django one of the most thrilling big bands among France’s young jazz formations: The Amazing Keystone Big Band. Their new creation, featuring Stochelo Rosenberg, Marian Badoï and the astounding James Carter, will open the festival.

We will evoke Stéphane Grappelli with Mathias Levy and family stories with Romane and his sons.
We chose the great Marcus Miller, David Krakauer and Jean-Jacques Milteau to teach you that the blues can speak in more than one tongue.
Nino Josele and maestro Chano Dominguez will thrill you with their evocation of Paco De Lucia. You will dance to the sound of Monophonics and Electro Deluxe, and immerse yourself in Bratsch’s traditional music.
So take a trip around the world, where music is one and many, where all blues tunes are sung in unison to voice clearly our lust for life and deliver Django’s message: Let freedom ring!"
