So many great early TV performances were lost in the days before video recording, unless they filmed it at the same time. Love those BBC programme listings. Reminds me of radio shows like The Goon Show, Just A Minute, Paul Temple Detective and the lady shopping reporter commenting on how... "the sun this morning, was shining right up my back passage".
Oh, the good old days, when we "listened" to the radio. Maybe some kind and clever sole will dig up some more Django footage somewhere. What we've got so far is amazingly cool.
Swang on,
PS: sorry if this wound up as a double post. Still getting used to the updated site.
Here is a brief article that appeared in the Radio Times the week before the Quintet's TV broadcast in August 1939. It is difficult to believe Beryl Davis was only 14/15 when she toured and recorded with the group.
I don't think I had ever seen the word "commère" (a female compère) used before.
... (although that website says that Harry Davis was her father).
@-) A typo/brain fade!! Harry Davis sounds a bit more likely to be Beryl Davis' father than Oscar Rabin. I couldn't find a wiki on Harry Davis as Oscar Rabin was the more famous and I unthinkingly wrote his name.
The only thing romany about their band was the name. Here they are. Pity about the quality:-

It states that her father Harry Davis is the guitarist.
