  Why is a chord a "7th"? What makes a chord "diminished"? What is a "slash chord" and are they dangerous?

  There must be some kind of explaination why its called a F7 (/C).

  Your chord is "F7 slash C" The note after the slash is a bass note added to the chord, ie. you are adding a low C-note to your F7.
  
  
  As to that pesky "X"-string in the middle, there are a couple ways to deal with it: Use the pad of you finger on the next string down to damp the X, pluck the correct notes only, or say "screw it," hit the open note as you play the chord and either damp the whole chord or quickly move on to another chord... maybe using a transitioning fill. There are lotsa a ways of faking it.
