When I flew in jets, I was always "precious" with my ears. While our helmets provided well-fitted ear cups with sound protection, I still wore "double" hearing protection (i.e. foamies in the ears, then the helmet). It meant I had to turn the radio volumes up a bit, but I was hoping to keep out a lot of that high frequency noise.
Toward the end, I did get some fitted earplugs, which were essentially in-ear monitors. The docs came and squirted some sort of goopy gel into our ear canal that hardened quickly. They pulled it out and then went away. A few weeks later, my ear plugs arrived. I imagine that is the process for the good ones being sold. If they are uncomfortable, you won't use them. I think the cheaper alternative are the earbud approach with a tight-fit rubber end that blocks the canal and does a similar thing. Like the AirPods Pro type thing. Those can be under $200.
@paulmcevoy75 I was laughing but it's so true. Once the damage is done, it's irreparable. At least based on today's medicine. You get a solid protection for less than 10th of a price though. The ones I got are supposedly aimed towards live concerts, clubs etc...and promises to not harm the music while keeping the hearing safe. It comes with three different inserts, going from low to high db attenuation, $30.

If we're talking about the same thing, $500 easily.
