Hello! I work at a used books and antiques store in Maryland (Second Story Books) and we currently have a collection of ~3,000 Django records for sale at our Rockville location (full post down below and listed on our store website secondstorybooks, com). We have a detailed inventory to share with any interested buyers. Thanks for reading! Collection of nearly 3,000 Django Reinhardt 78rpm shellac and 33rpm vinyl records. The collection includes 2,500 total 78s, of which there are 521 unique discs (with the remainder being duplicates). Includes recordings on a variety of labels (Swing, Ultraphon, Dial, Decca, Brunswick, Columbia and many more) and captures some of Django’s earliest 1930s recordings. In addition to the single 78s, the collection includes three 1940s 78rpm four-disc sets (3-4 copies of each). Finally, there are 356 33rpm LPs and 9 Django Reinhardt LP box sets. All 78rpm records are sleeved and the majority have an additional thin cardboard jacket for extra protection. This collection belonged to a dealer and a detailed inventory is available upon request. And, of course, feel free to reach out and schedule an appointment to view in person, as this collection is only available through local pick-up. Thank you. Price: $18,000 (or best offer)

Is it possible for some entity devoted to this music to sift through and determine if some of these recordings have never been digitized?

There are two really good discographies of Django, Paul Vernon's book which is still available on Amazon, and Freddie Haederli's which isn't available. Haederli's actually has all the 78s, LPs and CDs -by label and matrix number!- issued for each tune recorded. 160+ tight pages. These documents are very meticulous and comprehensive and represent a colossal amount of work.

It's kind of weird, Django's 78s just don't seem to rate very highly in the bizarro world of 78 collectors (I was once a serious collector of blues and country 78s...). Certainly not like a Paramount or Black Patti blues record. Value in that world is largely a matter of rarity and Django's records are not rare, because the same tune might have been sold on many different labels, same as with his LPs and CDs. My only Django 78s are one 4-disc box set, in excellent condition with the original booklet and I think I paid $10 for it.

Django's body of work is unique - there is very little in 1000+ recordings that anyone could call filler. And it has been well-documented by many people over the decades. But $18k for this? I don't think so.

Just by the way, Vernon's book does have the info re 78, LP and CD, the format's just not as simple. That book usually costs about $100 but if you want it and are patient, used ones turn up for much less, I paid $40 for mine.

If you see a 78 entitled "Blues Barbizon" on the Dial label, be advised it isn't something you have not heard before. It's a retitle by an unscrupulous label - anything Django on Dial should be avoided.
