I'm still recovering. It was cool seeing everyone, as usual. Anyone got any good videos? I have some great stuff but negotiating the rights to share it...

Withdrawal symptoms... It takes about a week to become a functional person again.

    Imagine this:

in the very small room, Sam Farthing and Sami Arefin are demoing Paul's new built guitars. Only a few people are in there. That in itself is a treat but it gets better. A few songs later Fapy pokes his head through the door in curiosity. I was standing right there, next to the door. I gently place my hand on his shoulder and say, please come in Don Fapy, come in please. He hesitates for a few seconds but steps in. He smiles, you could hardly catch him without a smile on his face throughout the whole week. It doesn't take a lot of arm twisting to get him to play once the guitar is in a vicinity. Sami relinquishes the guitar he was playing, Sam picks it up and Fapy sits down with a guitar Sam was playing previously. What follows is a two hours of music bliss, magic in every note. Tomas (Drgon) then Dennis then Zack switch duties on bass. There's been very few times in my life when music made me feel float like that.

My legacy for the evening was that I had a six pack with me at the moment. After a few songs, Fapy goes: if only I had a beer right now. I yank one out and send it via Paul and two seconds later Fapy is holding a beer and laughing out loud.

    What a night...

That was cool. That's basically why I build guitars.

The first time I made guitars and brought them to DIJ, I wasn't sure they were worth anything. They were pretty ugly and weird. Tomas (my spiritual leader) grabbed them and somehow handed one to Sebastian Giniaux and then one to Fanou and they played them for like 2 hours. It got me hooked on that feeling.

It reminds me of this thing I heard Tom Waits saying, about how he put together a transistor radio from a kit when he was a kid and somehow it felt like somehow he was a part of the music that got played over the radio.

Anyway, that was fucking cool. Also Buco your amp was essential to that whole thing happening. I only had an amp for one guitar. I hadn't planned for an unforgettable Sam and Fapy concert. Totally would not have happened without the amp (which got picked up today).....

Yeah, that amp situation has a bit of irony for me. After it was spoken for and I received the payment, there's Fapy playing through it, sending a bit of his DNA through its signal. But, it looks like it's going to a good home so it's all good. Damn, did it sound good though, the whole package was perfect.

I wanna add that interacting with Fapy was way, way above my wildest dreams. He's a sweetheart of a person, always smiling, friendly and approachable. Always listened to every question asked with the utmost interest, and answered in depth every time. Also, Tomas said that one time he said to the effect of "well, then you experiment and when it sounds good, then it's good", it's perfect answer lol.

I got my bucket list item checked off. He asked in the class what should we play and everyone hesitated. So I said that my big wish is to hear him play What a difference a day makes live and could he play that? He was like, oh I don't know I haven't played that in such a long time. But he kinda flew through it in a few seconds and said ok, let's do it. I told the class it's exactly like Nuages except it's using regular ii V I, instead of the tritones like Nuages. But it ended being just me and a guy next to me accompanying Fapy. He turned to me and said like, hey I hope you don't mind, this is my favorite tune also, haha. Hey man, if you read this, wasn't that ridiculously awesome?!

That’s so amazing! I always assumed What a Difference is part of what influenced Django to write Nuages.

Oh they're a 100% identical progression, except as I said in What a...it does a standard ii V, so Am7 to D7 (if you play it in a key of G) and Django did that tritone, Eb7 to D7, and they follow the same thing when they modulate down to fourth. But Nuages is its own thing compositionally and Django made those those tritone movements part of the melody, or vice versa, and it works beautifully as we all well know.
