Spirocore mediums have been the standard upright jazz string for many years. They can be overly bright/zingy on some basses when new but it doesn't take too long to break them in if you're playing a lot. It's not uncommon to get 5-10 years, if not more, out of a set of Spiros!
Evah Pirazzi strings are also nice and a good alternative to Spiros if you want something a little darker. The Evah Gold (aka Slaps) are good if you want something closer to gut without investing in guts. Managing tone, volume, and string tension is a big deal on upright bass. Lots of guys will mix strings from different sets to get things just right. It's a pretty different world from "Just get Argentines"! ☺️
If I remember correctly, one guy (Vic Wong playing bass at one gig!) used fishing line as strings, and it sounded fine (for gypsy jazz). Must have cost a lot less.
When I was at New England Conservatory I used weedwacker blades as bass strings for a minute. I called them "wackers".

My mistake!
I once put double bass strings (got them from my uncle who's a classical bassist) on a bass guitar and those pulled the neck out of it's socket like nothing. It wasn't an expensive instrument so it wasn't that big of a deal but still, didn't expect that.
