There's a substitution that he regularly does over those first two chords of Emaj which is like E Ab7 Db-, is that the thing you're talking about? Is there a particular recording you had in mind?
Yes. I'm thinking of the chords on Move, but he does something similar other places. This is what I'm hearing: Emaj9 Ab+7 /D Dbm9 C9 B7b9 (Gb F bass line) Em9 A13 etc.
Interesting thing to note is that Adrian's transcription has D9, as dominant quality chord, then to C9 to to B9. Just about every jam I'm in, people play Dmaj, not dominant. Sebastien G, in the class, was adamant that Django had a dominant chord in mind as that's a harmony movement from Debussy, which he guessed would've been Django's inspiration, D to C to B, all dominant.
That is interesting, it does seem like Bireli is playing it that way. In the two Django recordings I've listened to it sounds like a D6/9, but it's difficult to hear for sure. The other thing that I rarely hear any modern players doing that's on the Django recordings is the chromatic movement on the first two chords. The EmM7 that Django and the piano do make the tune sound more troubling imo.
Yeah we talked about that chromatic movement a few years ago when TB was Mike’s song of the month, there’s a thread somewhere.. here’s the video I made at the time

That's it! It sounds like sometimes he plays an Em9sus. This progression reminds me of Jaco's Three Views of a Secret.

As for the last A substitution, I found another group that plays it: https://open.spotify.com/track/57iThdnvhgsKERzh9nq2fD
it does sound as though they got it directly from Move.
