How does Bdim over A7 work? Is that because it's enharmonic with g#dim, so it's a vii/A7?
I like to play using visual cues/patterns rather than theory and so in this case I think of the Bdim as a chord sub for E7 in the same way that Bm6 is a chord sub of E7. E7 is a fifth from the A7 and so its a tension chord or you can think of it as a vi chord in the key of D. therefore, it sorta works as tension towards the Dmaj in the same way that the A7 is tension towards D in itself.

Some songs with chains of dominants "Sweet georgia brown" , "Double scotch", "Micro",etc.
Remember to do some in major and some in minor.
