Something that I heard Sam say recently has made a lot of difference for the better in my tone production. He calls it "activating the string". When I approach it that way, I'm not thinking about picking loud or soft. It's just that, activating the string and then controlling the dynamics. It probably came at the right time because I was already spending a lot of time and thought in that area but it's been a bit of a game changer for me.
