Gig Bags That DON'T Fit

What are some of the gig bags you've tried or purchased that definitely don't fit your manouche guitar, either in length or with the bridge height?

I'm trying to source a good sturdy gig bag, optimally with a firm foam interior until I have a need for a flight case (which may never happen but I may eventually get to the level of competence where I can fly up to jam with you guys at DIJ or Samois).

I've seen a bunch of general gig bags that don't look to be very protective and then there's a big jump in price for flight cases.

Should I just deal with it and get a cheaper hard case for right now?

I recently bought a Mono dreadnaught bag (used by others here as well) and have been happy with it. While it's slightly oversized for a Selmer style guitar once the bag is zipped up it holds the guitar snugly.

Generally dreadnaught bags will run slightly large, but can still work, while classical bags will run slightly small and may or may not work.

Depending on the guitar the Reunion blues classical bag is what I have been using - it's a good fit for selmer size guitars. Quite protective as well. I like it. I fly with it often enough and am fairly confident in it even when I have to gate check it (though I hate, hate, hate that!)

All dreadnought cases will offer a decent fit. At least they'll be big enough. You'll have some extra space at the top and bottom, sides are pretty good. Some more discussion here

I'm not sure that slightly-too-big is an issue with a decently padded gig bag, since there are no rigid interior surfaces to worry about knocking into. And if you feel that a snug fit is needed, it's not hard to pad the areas of slop.

An alternative to a soft-sided bag would be something like the Travelite dreadnought case (model TL-50)--rigid exterior, lots of expanded foam all around the guitar. I've been using the smaller case (for my National M-1) for several years. Both my Selmer-styles (a Dunn and a Park) fit in non-Travelite dreadnought cases without any problem, though internal geometry might vary (for example, the fixed position of an accessory box). My favorite gig bag is an old TKL 5415, now out of production. The rough equivalent successor model seems to be the 6115/XL Zero-Gravity.

There's no issues with the bridge getting squashed?

I’m one of the people with the mono gig bag, and I’m happy with the fit.

I still like my Travelite that is mentioned (and photos) in the Flight Case link above that Buco sent out. For the price I paid for it, it is a great piece of gear. The only downside is the shoulder straps. If you were going on tour in Europe and schlepping your guitar through train stations, up and down streets, etc, you might try to pad them more. That is where the Mono shines.

Also in the Mono dreadnaught camp. Perfect bag, very sturdy and great storage. Every Mono product I've had has been great. I have their DJ backpack that I use both for gigs as well as my general work/personal travel and it's a brilliant design.
