From his recent album, Swing 25, called If You Love. Beautiful melody, so well put together with surprising harmonic directions, weaving between minor and major tonalities, beautifully played. It's an amazing tune, up there with the best of the best.
The whole album is really nice. His version of Diminishing is the most laid back you've heard. It's almost a ballad. And it works great. He included one of my favorite songs, It's Alright With Me. Check out the rest,

Yeah, I was happy to get a copy when I went to DiJ!
I listened to it on my way to a gig that is about and hour drive and was able to listen to the whole album a couple times. LOTS of tremolo on this album and I really like that. His tremolo rips. Kind of average quality in terms of fidelity/sound quality. The playing on Sam's part is very nice and he sounds very comfortable. Love it. If I'm remembering right a couple really nice waltzes. Makes me want to learn Dorado Swing!
Interesting what you thought about the recorded quality. Nothing jumps out at me when I listen. It's a straightforward recording, bare bones. When I listened to If You Love on my good system, I did wish it had a better sound stage. Often when I sit in the sweet spot, I get a very three-dimensional sound. Speakers sort of disappear and you just hear a wall of music. But that didn't happen with this song, even though the instruments individually sound very good.
Good points Buco. Probably not even worth mentioning recording quality as it was perfectly adequate and perhaps bare bones as you say. I've been doing some recording over the last year in the studio so my ears are tuning into that aspect as well as the actual playing.
It's super important. There are albums out there in this genre that I listen less, or not at all, because of how they're recorded.
Anybody know what guitar and pick Sam plays? His tone is quite unique in my opinion, a little on the modern side.
Yes, I really do enjoy the sweet tremolos, very melodic, almost Spanish or something I can't quite put my finger on it.
He has a tortoise pick. Lately he plays a guitar that he built himself under the Craig Bumgarner's guidance. Before that he was using a guitar built by Rino VH and before that a guitar built by Craig B. What's interesting is even though Craig helped him with the build, the guitar came out sounding on a darker side, the way Sam likes it. And guitars that come out of Craig's shop, while you can't really say they're bright, they're definitely not darker sounding.
Hey Buco, thanks for the great info. Yea, his tone is slightly darker. I've heard a little of Craigs guitar and they do sound really lovely.
Good album. I think I can hear Bireli's influence at times. Buco, this particular track is probably my least favorite on the album 😄 The waltzes are excellent (tracks 3 and 9).
I hear what richter says on the audio quality, it's sort of like there's a blanket draped over the speaker. Seems the beautiful highs of these guitars weren't captured, or have been lost somewhere along the way in the production.
