7mm Wegen

MikeKMikeK Asheville, NCNew Altamira M-30 D-Cedar, Gitane DG-320 John Jorgensen

I just ordered a 7mm Wegen pick from Michael. I'll try it out on my "rhythm-guitar only" gigs & let you all know how it goes. I'm curious if anyone here has used one? If it doesn't work out on the gigs, I suppose I'll at least have a cool looking paper weight.

I have one. It works pretty well for rhythm. Not ideal for lead in my opinion. Not quite heavy enough for a paper weight but still funny.

I tried one a long time ago, it was awful for anything but rhythm playing.

The distance between the strings is only around 9mm-ish, so it's awkward to play lines. Actually even 5mm picks are dreadful for lead, although I'm aware some players can make such fat picks work somehow.

I think that the trick is in the right (or left) handed bevel. You can shape, it sort of like a diagonal chisel tip that gets narrower (though not necessarily to a sharp edge). I've taken virtually unplayable (and very dull sounding) 4mm picks and beveled them to be very playable for leads, as well as sounding crisp.

Agreed with pdg. The Dunlop Primetone 5mm are very usable for leads because of how the bevel is shaped/tapered.

I have two Nick Sansone picks. One Duved model and the model Nick Sansone himself uses. I love the latter for pure acoustic playing. With the Duved model i couldn't get used to yet as the pick bevel area is way smaller and the grip area starts way earlier. My Duved model is ca. 5.5mm and my Nick Sansone model is ca. 6.5mm.

I made a little phone video comparison with other picks. Played on my Vit Cach. Strings are still the ones i played at Samoreau so not exactly new. Maybe it's helpful for someone though.

I played them sequentially from left to right. Wegen Twin 3,5mm, Dunlop 500 2mm, Nick Sansone pick 6,5mm, Duved model 5,5mm, Wegen The Button 5mm, Dunlop 500 1.5mm.

Sorry for the confused noises at times, it was a long day and it's still crazy hot in here...

P.S.: wanted to post in the other thread with the topic of the Nick Sansone picks, sorry...i guess this one is the legacy of that thread kinda so i'll leave it here

they all sound great! Somehow I think it doesn’t have anything to do with the picks!

Shows you these things are for the player mostly. To a listener there's barely any difference. Especially through the recording. Even if I'm a self confessed pick addict. Good playing though.
