One might think there would be zero anxiety in buying an extra seat for an instrument, but I think the airlines can still do what they want. There was a cellist that booked an extra seat for his instrument last year on a flight to Canada but then they ended up refusing him and his instrument boarding and they had to cancel the concert. Don't know all the details, but I still think there is still some subjectivity. When I did recently book the extra seat for my guitar, the gate agent saw it and said, "Now do we have an extra seat for that?" When I replied to the affirmative, he was relieved and cool as can be about it.
