Agreed, Djembes are much better for swing
Last outdoor jam I went to, a guy with a cajon was in the circle. He was very unobtrusive and kept a good tempo, it worked out. Shakers is when I go uh-oh.
Yes--Bongos or similar. Can add to a swinging rhythm section.
