Christiaan goes over some possibilities and he does a good job but none capture this arc that you hear from Tchan-Tchou. I tried for a while but it's like throwing a dart at a mosquito.
I was just listening to Tchan-Tchou version and there's a fluidity in his opening phrase that I don't hear from anyone else. Now I'm thinking maybe he did use a pull off, in the opening phrase, only on F to E. If I do that my playing gets a touch of that fluidity.
There are many recordings of Tchan Tchou playing La Gitane. The phrasing of the theme is somewhat different in every one as are many of the variations and form.
Oh, I didn't even know that... I was only familiar with the version from that CD compilation. There's also just like a couple of blurry videos of him on Youtube and that is all. So he's kind of like a mysterious guy for me really.
