No one has said Queen yet??? 100% favorite. I even had a Burns Brian May B-stock that mom bought me at the US Queen convention in Cleveland. Unfortunately, it got left at Greatest Bar in Boston many years ago. I still pine for that bad boy.
I've always been voracious when it comes to my music listening. I never wanted just one band, I wanted them all. I wanted their influences. Across genres, etc. But if I think of quality of output and what bands I could stand to listen to a whole lot, even though I don't listen to them much anymore, I'd agree with the earlier mention of Led Zeppelin. They had blues, rock, folky, reggae. So if I had to pick one for quality, it would have to be them.
That said, even though some of their output isn't as consistent, the Clash had a similar effect. They aren't just lazy punk energy like the Sex Pistols. They were musicians playing complex parts, arrangements, feels, etc.
One that hasn't been mentioned is KISS. Again, some of their 80s stuff is meh, but the early albums have some really great stuff that is just straight ahead rock. Here's a project that came out a few years ago of some guys trying to channel that circa '78 sound. If you didn't know better, you'd probably think these were B-sides from that era.
P.S. @voutoreenie That Mad Season album is outstanding. Can listen to that cover-to-cover. I love how Lanegan just comes in for a few songs but adds great texture.
@billyshakes Absolutely and have you ever listened to the last show they did at the Moore in Seattle?? Might even be better than the album and the concert video is pretty incredible as well, last time Layne was filmed truly "happy" before his gf passed away and that was basically it for him.
Billy nailed it when he suggested the album Chronicle. I echo his sentiments that you really can't go wrong with any of the tunes on that gem of a collection. And there are loads of tunes on there. But Jamie, since you asked:
For incredible guitar solo jams from John Fogerty, check out Suzy Q and I Put A Spell On You. For really nicely constructed, timeless classics like the song you mentioned, try Lodi & Long As I Can See The Light.
Suzy Q was our #1 jam during the elementary school dances. That's gotta be the first air guitar solo that I ever learned.
