One odd sounding string.

For some reason, the third string (G) on one of my guitars has been sounding a little odd and different than the others. I know that string often wears out the fastest, and I’ve swapped it out recently. I’ve been using Argentine 11s on this guitar. It sounds a little odd and different than the other strings especially in the middle of the fret board. No buzzing/fretting out, just odd and different, less ring as compared to the other wound strings.

I’m wondering if there may be an issue with the slot on the bridge or on the nut. I also wonder if there’s just some issue about the harmonics and range of notes amplified by that string on that particular guitar. Anyone ever try a thick unwound .22/.23 at that position?

Anyone ever experienced this?

There is a tip that Bob Holo offered in the past, loosen the string until you can get the loop off the post (or you can pull the string ball back a touch) and twist it a couple of times. People said this trick would give life to a dead sounding string.

I know Remi Harris is using unwound G.

I used unwound G for a while (probably a few years) after getting fed up with a run of short-lived Argentine Gs. Just a regular acoustic strings, Dean Markley I think they were.

It worked well, especially when using a magnetic pickup - actually it gave more consistency particularly on those melodies where the range of the notes go down to the G string.
