I agree with you on this point, in that I do gravitate to the players that push the boundaries. Additionally, I recently played a gig that George Benson came out to see that I invited him to, and we talked about Bireli and several other players. George said he was freaked out about how good Bireli was, the first time he heard him play. I thought this was quite a compliment to Bireli, but I did tell George that when I asked Bireli who his favorite player was (when I met Bireli years ago), he said you, George.
I play many styles myself and transcribe daily - straight ahead jazz (Joe Pass, George Benson, and Barney Kessel), classical (David Russell and John Williams), Flamenco (Paco of course, and Vicente Amigo), shred/fusion (Greg Howe, Guthrie Govan, and Tosin Abasi), and the Brazilian 7-string guitar (Yamadu Costa). I have found, over the years, that doing so, ultimately enriches your gypsy jazz; bringing out your own improvisational voice. I think this is why, in addition to pure genius, Bireli, and some of the players you mentioned, have what they have and create the music they do.
Whoa dude, hanging out with George Benson...nice one, beautiful.
I wonder if Mozes and the rest knew of Zawinul's weight... It was a nice encounter and a nice gesture of Joe to spend time and listen. Certainly it left a lasting impression on Mozes if he listed the episode in his biography. It reminded me when I saw a video where Stochelo said it would've made life easier in many instances had he learned to read music. The rest of the Rosenberg Trio was nodding in agreement.
