I started with the 5 positions but I hybrid some so it equals seven. That said I don't use it exclusively for Gypsy Jazz, I use it to embellish the Gypsy Jazz I know and it is a good reference point to where I am on the neck if I am looking at it. I think knowing five or seven positions is great but I doubt many top GJ players think that way.
