The festival runs for four days - details here: https://www.festivaldjangoreinhardt.com/en/ You can usually buy day tickets so it is possible to drop in for a couple of days. Certainly, if your main aim is to demo guitars, that should be enough.

The main festival is in Fontainbleau, a few miles from Samois. This is the place to start, as it normally has a special section for luthiers. You won't see many, or perhaps any, factory made guitars here but it's a good opportunity to play a range of guitars plus meet and talk to the people who made them. They will often be open to offers on their guitars, so you can get some very good deals for cash. An afternoon is more than enough is this is your main aim.

Most of the Samois regulars camp at a municipal campsite in Samoreau, which is also a few miles from Samois. This is not an official site for the festival, but in practice it is where the real action is. Some people never make it out of the campsite to the festival. At the weekend music is played all night, until the sun rises, and many of the top players end up here. Some luthiers do have unofficial stalls - you can usually find Jerome Duffell here for example. Here too you might find private sellers and this is where you can pick up a bargain (although I wouldn't trust everyone you meet here). But Samoreau can't be done in a day - it's good to go to (the later in the evening the better) if you want to just get a glimpse of it, but to really get to know it means hanging out and being part of the community.

Lots of things happen alongside the festival which are nothing to do with the organisers but make the most of the opportunity of having so many Django players in one place. A recent innovation has been a campsite-based set of workshops with David Reinhardt, Django's grandson - very reasonably priced and an amazing opportunity.

So much of what we call Samois is unofficial that it's hard to guarantee what kind of experience you will have, except that if you like this music, this really is the Mecca.
