What Pick do you use

    I probably would not be buying Blue Chip if those primetone were available back then.

    For me the Blue Chip took years to notice any wear. I still have and occasionally use the SR60 and KS60. I unfortunately lost TP1R, I'm still hoping it's misplaced and it'll pop up somewhere. They're really phenomenal picks.

    Somehow, a few years ago, I got the bug to back to the thick, 4mm, picks after years of evangelizing about the BC. Most of the time I use Killy pick I got from Gian's drawer clearance. If not that, than the Safari from Jokko, either G4 or Nousche.

    I bought the G4 but in the standard fake tortoiseshell material. And for some reason I don't connect with that material. I have another pick (look at the photo, is it Dugain??) which I'm not sure the maker of and it's the same thing, I don't like the material. It's mainly a feel thing I guess but I don't seem to connect with it. I do use the G4 now at church to play chords, it's fine for that, but for leads, nope.

    Hi Joonas, I own a couple picks made out of this material and same for me...it's almost like too "soft" feeling compared to other plastic pick materials. Oddly enough, the opaque black made from same plastic feels better to me and I even played one for about 4-6 months but it just doesn't feel good after playing on it for an hour or so.

    Hi Buco. As we've discussed, I'm also a huge fan of that safari material. Unfortunately, it wears pretty quickly so my favorite pick from Jokko is pretty dead now. I still miss his original rhinoforce material, which took months of Sundays to wear down...but since he's not making picks anymore, I guess that's a pretty moot point either way 😂

    Anyway, I decided to drop coin on BlueChip so we'll see...will report back!

    Never was a fan of the Django Button, but with the new D'Addario strings on my Altamira M01f, I love it!

    I've always wondered where does the information come from that Django used a button-like pick? Does such a pick exist in reality somewhere in the museum or someone remembers him using one like that or... ? Because I've noticed that regardless of maker the button-like picks are always someway tied with Django's name.

    @Joonas

    This is John Pearse's contribution to the legend , if I remember correctly:

    Anyway, with the Altamira the pick makes sense.

    On the subject of picks wearing down & losing their edge: are there any general guidelines on how to rebuff them to get their mojo back? I imagine it depends on the material -- but I've always made the picks worse by trying to. I've tried filing & sanding & still have no clue. I still have some of Jokko's awesome picks & I'd love to bring them back to glory.

    BTW, I've got lots of picks but I've settled on the thick Wegen Gypsy Jazz pick & the thick black Dunlop Primetones (polycarbonate). They're the same shape & they have a dark/round sound but still project pretty nicely. I soooo wish the Gators were made 3mm...

    Same!! So much. I should see if any of my old music business procurement contacts can help me lobby Dunlop lol.

    On a separate note, I've also been playing with a Duved pick again and that material is just great. It's an interesting shape to get used to but the custom version Nick made for me without the thumb groove is moving into my rotation and ras a replacement for the Jokko shellrin pick that gives me trouble after prolonged use

    Yeah I just cant hold them. Not enough girth. I once tried glueing two together but it sounded dreadful. I bet there should be a big enough market out there so wtf Dunlop?

    You need to work from 240 grit sanding paper, through progressively finer papers, down to 2000 and 3000 grit wet and dry, to get the whole surface silky, shiny and smooth. It requires time, effort and patience, but it's satisfying to get a great finish and good action with the pick.
