How to Place Leather Under the Tailpiece

Is it difficult to remove a tailpiece from a Gitane DG-255? I just picked up a used Paris Swing GG-39 with a leather piece under the tailpiece and it doesn't have the annoying overtones like my Gitane. I assume it is just a simple removal of the three small screws, picking up a piece of thin leather, cutting to size and replacing the tailpiece. Anything else I should know? Will I have to buy longer screws? Thanks!
