I came across this : the famous "Fauvist" artist Maurice de Vlaminck was a gypsy musician who played violin with the street orchestras and cafe buskers of Paris in the early 20th century.

What a great painter. Sad to read of how WWI messed up his life. What a load of BS only to be repeated a generation later...
This painting is amazing:
