Just curious how it works for the top players as far as guitar sponsorship. Do they get paid to play certain brands, or do they just get free or discounted guitars? Is it different for European players compared to US players? Not to pick on Robin Nolan, but I've seen him play or endorse Eimers, Gitane, Cigano, JWC, etc. Of course, he makes them all sound great.

    Jon, I doubt that anyone gets paid to play a certain brand of guitar. Artist endorsement deals vary, but usually include either a free or discounted guitar. Royalties are paid when a guitar maker sells a model with a particular artists name on the headstock. Speaking of Robin Nolan, I have seen him do a concert on a Cigano and sound better than most of us would on a vintage Selmer. At the end of the day, tone is in the fingers...

    Since Nolans were brought up I was always curious as to what brand they play with that vintage finish especially Kevin:


    I would think it's not an Altamira

    Robin has for a long time. Kevin was in the USA....not sure if he has moved.

    I'm not a star (as if you needed to hear me say that), I'm just a working stiff/musician who asks lots of questions. I've gotten an "artist discount" from an amplifier company (based here in St. Louis) and a discount on my guitar mic system for writing a testimonial and providing a picture of myself using the product live. In the case of the mic, the manufacturer was just getting his business in gear, and I called him at the right time.

    I have had a number of endorsements (none with GJ guitars as I am a newbie).
    I have had all kind of deals, Gibson gave me a guitar as I was putting their instruments on TV regularly, as a smooth jazz artist I have been given free pedals, other companies who are boutique and small have sold me guitars and amps at artist rates (usually what they would sell it to a store). It's about exposure and if a company believes people seeing you using their stuff will bump sales then you get a basic deal or better, it is all relative. I have had lots of free stuff thrown at me as a composer and I won't take it now unless I really am going to use it. Most free stuff if not good gets in the way and I can't be bothered with ebaying it.
