iPad & Tablet Use in Gypsy Jazz

Just curious as to what musicians are using in the way of tablets. What size works best, 7", 8", 10", or larger. Apple or Android? Do they work well on stage? I was on my way out of town and I realized if I had a tablet, I could take all of my sheet music, grilles, etc. in a nice, compact and organized form. Of course I would still have to take Michael's Gypsy Rhythm or Gypsy picking as well as Stephane Wrembel's Getting Into Gypsy Jazz, as those books are indispensable at my current level of play. And, do those books happen to be available for tablets? Any input appreciated.

  • I use a 9" Nexus 7 tablet with the paid version of Setlist Helper App.I love the app which will do all and more ypu need it do, even in free version. Some conveniences in paid version at $4.99 maybe. A bargain!

I know how most professionals feel about relying on charts and lyrics, but I'm 60 years old and only a couple of years into GJ as well as a part time gigger. I played Rockabilly, Country, Folk and Bluegrass exclusively for 40 years and know hundreds, maybe thousands, of songs in those genres. My hard drive is full! Additionally, chords aren't a problem in those genres: there aren't many and they're basic!

I've learned 3-4 hours of GJ songs with vocals to most, but I can't gig without my crutch!

Lengthy explanation to ward off haters!

I have Wrembel's and Nolan's books on tablet. I don't have eBook of Michael's but reckon it can be had.

    Good luck!
  • I use IPad 2 with I real B. Chord charts for 3xx GJ tunes. I modify to suit our arrangements.

Good for reminding an ole guy when they start to run together.

I use a Samsung 7 inch tablet for storing the Django Fake Book, Dennis Chang backing tracks and I real book for practice and playalongs. Excellent sound quality through my Laney acoustic amp.

Although we try to avoid charts whenever possible, when they are needed we use 10" iPads with forScore app. This is the best app we've found for managing scores and setlists. forScore is compatible with a number of bluetooth foot-operated page turners, my favourite being the PageFlip Firefly.

I started out with an Android Tablet with PDF reader without AUTOSCROLL, turning pages and print to small for my eyes got me checking for something better. I ditched that for a ipad 2 and been using PerformPro.

The best feature is it will AUTOSCROLL hands and device free.
Great for all those words I forgot.
Works great with Apple TV to display on BIG SCREEN.
Also have a iPad holder that Clamps on to Mike Stand or table.
Was not the easiest to load and organize however it is do able. Once it is set up it's great.

PM me if I can be of any help

I use iRealB on my HTC One phone for making/sharing our setlists and for having the chord sheets as a reference, though am trying to get away from the crutch of reading charts, so mainly using it for newer tunes that I've not memorised yet

Here's a question for tablet users... What's it like using your tablet for tunes longer than 32 bars? eg, "Cheek to Cheek" "Begin the beguine" etc.

    Thanks!
Paul Cezanne: "I could paint for a thousand years without stopping and I would still feel as though I knew nothing."

Edgar Degas: "Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.... To draw, you must close your eyes and sing."

Georges Braque: "In art there is only one thing that counts: the bit that can’t be explained."
  • Mine autoscrolls and can be used with Bluetooth page turner pedal, but since I need mainly lyrics, Setlist Helper uses Chord Pro, which can be typed on computer and then synced with tablet.
It also does a search for lyrics and chords and has an Add feature, that just automatically places it in correct form.
It also uses images and PDF's so for instrumentals I usually copy a chart and fit it to one tablet page.
It's fantastic, but only for Android. http://www.setlisthelper.com/

Hi there. Can any of you kind gentlemen please share your iRealb list on the forum please. The current lists mostly have the wrong arrangements and it would be so much easier if someone with a little more talent and aptitude could share their arrangements for the real deal Django versions. Thanks in advance for the help.
