Do any of these generate tab from sound? Or do the notes (pitch and length) have to be discerned by the ear and entered manually?

I think sybellius does it from sound. Problem is, with guitar how can it possibly know where you're playing any given note ?

good question @Charles Meadows .. I'm an engineer with mathematics background, I have great interests in pitch detection / fourier analysis and have got some some big plans in this area :) I worked for years in image matching and I am 99% certain I can apply the same algorithms and principles to note matching. If only I could quit my day job and dedicate some time to these fleshing out these ideas and seeing if I can make some promising results ..

Yes Powertab and GuitarPro, Tux....have MIDI playback so one can slow things down, loop, whatnot which is great for practicing as well. Again I recommend PowerTab out of all of them, it takes a few to figure out all it's features but it really covers all the basis. For example for things like position shifting (placing same notes on different frets by highlighting a whole section and pressing a button) l found it the easiest vs Tux or GeetarPro. But the MIDI playback is really benefitial.

@Charles Meadows and @AmundLauritzen .....Sibelius can interpret midi input, not sound. In order to use it with guitar you need a midi pickup. From the reviews I have read the Fishman Triple Play is the first midi pickup that can be set up to work with Sibelius without a huge number of errors. If you input really cleanly, (fingerstyle?) I gather the dots are accurate and as each string is tracked by a separate magnetic pole it will tab it out for you if desired.
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed
  • Sorry auto correct keeps removing the I from MIDI

Anthony, the old hotclub.co.uk site has a lot of power tab transcriptions under the Playing tab. You can use some of those to get an idea of how to use the software. A nice feature is the score checker, which you can use as you go along to correct errors.
