I used to talk to Mike Peters from time to time and no doubt, he was difficult. He always hedged about exactly what he had, and often would only allow you hear part of something and never allow a full copy. For example, before the content of the acetate"valse manouche" AKA Choti was in common circulation, he once allowed me to hear most of it over the telephone. For some arcane reason, he wouldn't allow me to hear all of it. Same with Django's recording of "Pour que ma Vie Demeure". Then later he did offer to send me incomplete copies of these same tunes - weird. Otherwise I found him an interesting and knowledgeable guy. He just had the collector's affliction - the belief that keeping something a secret somehow made it more valuable. I don't think he has the Volpe films, the late Richard Lieberson (a generous collector and scholar who had lots of film and who originally gave me a copy of Volpe's taxi film) was certain he did not have it. Yet both Fred Sharp and John Bajo - two totally generous and honest men - assured me that they'd seen it. The 8mm reels were sent around the country via the postal service (!) and John seemed to think that one of the reels was lost that way. I don't know how to contact him anymore but I think he's working in the music programming department of Sirius Radio these days.
The story of the lost 8mm reel concerns the Volpe film about Django's departure or the Spaghetti show and Django playing with Volpe (no sound said to me Fred Sharp)?
Very interesting the Sirius Radio! do you know where is that radio?
According to Loren Schoenberg, he is hoping to get the Savory collection released by the end of next year. However, he gave me different information as to what Django recordings were in the collection to that he apparently gave Spatzo!!!??? :?
I would like to remember you all that if you have followed the whole story you will understand that the guy who found those recordings is Mr. Loren Schonberg!
Hi Richard! You are right for the weddings we have had a lot of gigs last year in the most beautiful castles of north Italy. Many of them were played in quartet with the best italian jazz clarinetist Alfredo Ferrario, with singet and guitarist Andrea Bottelli and different double bass players one of the best being Yves Rossignol. On my side I am not a professional player
When was Pour Que Ma Vie Demeure found? All I know is that Michel Attenoux released a single playing that song and another song on saxophone in 1959. So it must've been in circulation by then? I don't know.
Also, how come the R-26 recordings which were recorded after Pour Que Ma Vie Demeure, were found and have good quality, but Pour Que Ma Vie Demeure has poor quality? Also, there is supposed to be another song before it, but papabecker gives this information about it:
Unknown title - ? Django Reinhardt et le Quintette du Hot Club de France
Stéphane Grappelli (v); Django Reinhart (g solo) & others musicians - 1948 March - unknown
He also tells us there might be two more R-26 recordings, one more with Stéphane and one with Hubert Rostaing:
R-Vingt-Six - ? Django Reinhardt et le Quintette du Hot Club de France
Stéphane Grappelli (v); Django Reinhart (g solo) & others musicians
Django’s 1948 March Recording Session - unknown
R-Vingt-Six - ? Django Reinhardt et le Quintette du Hot Club de France
Hubert Rostaing (cl); Django Reinhardt (g solo) & others musicians
Django’s 1948 March Recording Session - unknown
This Unknown Title might be the "Nicole" recording or some other recording possibly in Dave Goldin's collection at radiogoldindex.com
I think it's very important we get to hear those recordings! I'm still hoping for a response from him so Teddy can give us some good news.
