Thanks for the, albeit anecdotal, info re: modern Argies. After reading my own post, I thought, “this doesn’t make sense”…. I’m choosing strings that I admit don’t sound the best because of non-sound related characteristics. I should be using the best sounding strings and adapting to whatever non-sound related shortcomings they have. Anyway, when changing strings last night I threw on an old set of argies I had (the older plastic style packaging not the newer cardboard). It’s been a while, I’m gonna give them another try.

I tried to post up as “the guy who really likes D’addario GJ strings”, but I may have ended up convincing myself to go back to Savarez.

@Arcticguitar no, you were spot-on about QC being an issue with Argies tho, at least the older, pre-cardboard packaging ones (I used to get a bunch of bad/dud Bs and high Es along with the occasional A or low E that would unwind after barely playing on them) - I just wanted to mention that for whatever reason, they really do seem to have improved their manufacturing process and I've a had a couple friends notice the same thing, @JSanta as well now too :)

I'm all about the Argies. I tried the D'Addarios several years ago because my local guitar store carried them & I was curious. But they weren't quite as good as the Argies in sound & feel to me. Not bad at all, just not what I'm used to. As to the quality control, I go through around 24 sets a year (the 11's, loop end from Michael) and in the last 5 years or so, I've only had one bad string. Not bad!

Needed to replace my strings on my Ivanovski (Selmer copy), always played Arg's 11's. Put on a set of  D'Addario 10's and I'm hearing sounds from my guitar I've never heard before, overtones, undertones, sidetones, etc. And I like the feel of these. Could just be they're something different, but I'm going to stick with  D'Addario for a while.

Argie 10s vs. D'Addario 11s is like apples vs. oranges. It would be interesting to try 10s of both, or 11s of both.

On the other hand, since there are four possibilities, no harm in A/B-ing any two of the four -- at least you know which of those two you prefer.

I've used D'Addario Gypsy Jazz strings a number of times and have been satisfied enough to use them often.

I found some seller on reverb and I got 5 packs for 30$ and I swear the A string is is like .3.-4 thicker on all of them and they felt kinda sticky also..the last set I put on was way better than all the rest.. I tried them multiple times from Amazon and they felt great for me but they wore down really fast but these last ones I got lasted way longer , with significantly more use..I don't what's up with them lol

Alright, I'll jump in here finally - I've used the D'addario and Argintine's, while I prefer the Argies for sound; The D'addario are for sale in more retailers here. I like d'addario in general for strings, and use the half rounds on my archtops, and occasionally the classical strings and regular steel strings.

Recently I bought some Galli which I really don't like. . . the sound is very primary (less overtones and complexity) and the loops are too small for my guitar, and require extra time to put on the guitar. They also feel 'slow' or sticky and stiff to me.

Anyone else got another brand they've tried and liked (or hated) a lot? and why or why not?
