I never used it much myself. That said, it's unfortunate to say the least that it's happening because of people abusing it.

Let's not blame some people that used a cool niche website to put up transcriptions of 88 year old Django and Grappelli songs so that some kids can learn it. I think it's happening because greedy music companies and copyright laws designed to protect huge corporate profits, not the actual small artist.

Yeah fair enough. Let's not make it all innocent and altruistic either.

That's a shame, I'm one of the small but loyal users of the site, I've got a lot from it. It sounds like Adrian is taking this step because of the amount of work involved in responding to take down requests rather than being sued, which is fair enough. I've done this myself as it happens, I've had a few books published in my time and when I find them on sites like Scribd I send them a take down request, which they always comply with, but that's still work for someone to do and I don't get the impression that there's a big team sitting behind Soundslice, which has never charged or taken ads for its community section.

There's a hopeful note at the end which suggests Adrian is working on an alternative so fingers crossed that works out - and if it doesn't thank you @adrian for everything, it's been a brilliant site and I've learned a lot from it.

I’m not totally clear on what is actually being shut down here. Whenever I want to learn a new tune, the first thing I do is a Google site search of Soundslice.com to see if anyone has posted tabs for it. Is that the part that is being shut down, so all I will be able to see are the tabs I created myself?

You'll still be able to create a slice and keep it private. Jazz and especially Gypsy jazz is small slice for Sound slice. I doubt copyright lawyer would go chasing after a vintage jazz solo. It's the stuff that people can make money by selling the written music that it becomes an issue when something similar shows up publicly. At least that's my guess. YT tutorials don't seem to be an issue. I myself use the site just so I can slow something down and isolate small chunks and learn it myself.

But this won't affect the Soundslice as a business. Most of their revenue probably comes from licensing, to sites like DC Music School and especially TrueFire. So, while this will suck for some of the users, it's one less thing to manage for what as far as I know is a very small team behind the Soundslice.

Here is my understanding of it:

    • Soundslice slices created by you - they stay, but no more public sharing means that only you will able to see and access them.
    • Soundslice courses that you have paid for - they stay, nothing changes.
    • Soundslice slices that have been created by others and shared publicly - they disappear for you, you will no longer have the ability to find or access them.

Yikes! I guess I’m one of the small but dedicated people who use that “little used” section of the site! For example, just the other day I was revisiting Adrien’s classic arpeggio exercise: https://www.soundslice.com/slices/wvbVc/

i think there is a way to import other people’s slices into your own private ones, so I need to quickly do that to a bunch of them!

No, there is no way to import other people's slices into your own private slices (to my knowledge). They'd have to do something like export the slice to GPX and then send you the GPX file to import into your own slice.

Some slices might have printing enabled in Settings, but it's unlikely because printing is off by default.
