DJANGO A GOGO 2007

“DJANGO A GOGO” is a music festival, inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt, the legendary French-Gypsy guitarist. The festival happens mainly in Brooklyn, but also in queens this year, for its second edition. In order to celebrate the music of the master, we have some of the greatest guitar masters in the world performing both in a traditional and modern way.
Guitarists Emmanuel Kassimo, Pablo Robin and Laurent Hestin from France, Denis Chang from Canada, Alfonso Ponticelli from Chicago, and Stephane Wrembel from New York will demonstrate the power and the beauty of this music.

THE PLAYERS:

- AM KETENES: Emmanuel Kassimo and Pablo Robin.

Emmanuel started the guitar at age 10, with his father, grand father and uncles, all guitarists. Emmanuel is recognized as being one of the Masters of Gypsy Jazz guitar today, and a very prominent player in Europe. Stephane and him had a band in France in the 90’s “the 2 guitars”, and they were performing all over France.

Pablo Robin is a gypsy, who learned guitar through the traditional Gypsy vocal music, with his father, Retcha Robin, composer and guitarist. He decided to dedicate his life to the art of Gypsy rhythm guitar.

- LAURENT HESTIN:

Laurent is Stephane’s first guitar teacher, and a very famous guitarist in Europe, very well know for his versatility. This guy can play everything. He’s at ease in a contempory Jazz ensemble, and behind a traditional Balkan music band, into a Gypsy Jazz setting, or behind a Brazilian singer…He is a true virtuoso, a master of the guitar.

- SWING GITAN: Alfonso Ponticelli

Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan is Chicago's premier Gypsy Jazz ensemble.
A gypsy flamenco guitarist as well, Alfonso has been to Cordoba, Spain to study with the great flamenco guitarist Vicente Amigo. Alfonso is a multi-instrumentalist, having won the 1994 U.S. National Mountain Dulcimer Championship, and playing both banjo and guitar with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. He brings a wide and colorful repertoire from his many adventures in Spain, Italy, France, and all over the United States, including the Iridium in New York, where the legendary Les Paul invited Alfonso to play as a special guest with his trio. Alfonso is also a music educator in Chicago and introduced Django's music to the midwest United States nearly a decade ago, when he began teaching a weekly Django Guitar Styles Class at the Old Town School of Folk Music, one of the largest and most renowned folk music centers in the U.S. Alfonso is often invited to teach his popular workshops at festivals around the country.

- DENIS CHANG:

The name of his project is Flèche D'Or; also the title of a Django Reinhardt composition. Whether it is Gypsy Jazz, bebop or any other style, this is where you will be able to follow his musical journey.
He picked up the guitar in his teens and after having exploring various musical styles, he discovers the music of Django Reinhardt at the age of 19. For the next few years, he would dedicate himself exclusively to the style. To date, he has been in contact with the best musicians in the style such as Ritary Gaguenetti, Aurélien Trigo, Edd la Bish, Lolo Meyer, Paulus Schafer Chris Campion, Andreas Oberg, Fapy lafertin to name a few. Since 2006, he is sponsored by AJLguitars.
