Mayo Hubert - Caravan de santino
Mayo Hubert belongs to the young gypsy-generation from eastern France and represents continuity: following in the traces of Samson Schmitt and Yorgui Loefler, Mayo’s playing incarnates the typically svelte, lively swing of the region, which combines a vigorous attack with phrasing that is light and clear-cut.
Mayo’s music is undeniably reminiscent of that of Tchavolo Schmitt, who was his teacher (Mayo also accompanied him for seven years!) Fronting a dream rhythm-section - Francko Mehrstein and Gino Roman - Mayo stands out from the hordes of Django disciples by his choice of Laurent Maur as his sideman, playing a chromatic harmonica never heard in this style before (he’s a winner of the International Harmonica Competition in Trossingen).
This unusual line-up gives Mayo Hubert the opportunity to show not only his virtuoso technique but also the sureness of his melodic inspiration, with eleven original compositions which reach a resounding climax in the form of a little-known Django Reinhardt title on which he duets with his 13 year-old son.
