Installing a Schatten HFN Active

2 questions:
1) Does any one have advice on where to install a HFN Active pickup on a D-500?
I'm getting a lot of surface noise and a brittle tone when it's installed under the soundboard near the bridge.
2) I bought the pickup used and it did not come with any putty. What kind of putty could be used as a substitute?
