2004 Gallato Angelo Debarre

2004 Gallato Angelo Debarre

Although labeled a "Gallato," this instrument was built by Geronimo Mateos who has long been one of the leading Selmer Maccaferri style luthiers in Spain. Based in Madrid, his guitars are played worldwide by such notable luminaries as Angelo Debarre, Tchavolo Schmitt, and Gonzalo Bergara. Angelo Debarre played a Mateos guitar on the CDs "Come Into My Swing," "Entre Amis," and "Memoires," (Tchavolo Schmitt plays one as well on "Memoires") and Gonzalo Bergara played a Mateos built guitar on the CD Porteņa Soledad.

This Angelo DeBarre model, which was a flagship instrument in it's day and was signed on the back of the headstock by Angelo himself, features a spruce top, cocobolo back and sides, and a walnut neck with a traditional grafted headstock. Hardware includes Schaller three on a plate tuners and a Saga tailpiece. An endpin jack was installed but there is no longer any pickup wired to it.

The tone of this instrument is crisp, bright, and moderately dry, with a somewhat complex and open character. It projects exceptionally well, especially for leads which have an aggressive cut that really helps in pure acoustic situations. However, if played gently you can coax a very warm, mellifluous tone out of it. All in all, it's very traditional in nature with a sound and feel reminiscent of a vintage Selmer.

This instrument is in excellent condition, with only mild signs of use. It has a small number of dings on the body and some mild fretwear. Otherwise, it looks almost new and it plays very easily with low, 2.8mm action.

Although this model is no longer in production, it is essentially a high end Mateos that would cost $3500 or more new. Save big on this prestigious model!
