Originally, when I started looking for an acoustic gypsy jazz guitar in the Selmer/Maccaferri style, I had planned on purchasing a quality student instrument in the $500 to $1,500 range as I am a relative newbie having focused on classical guitar for 50 years and some straight ahead jazz on an Eastman Archtop over the past several years. 2024 Dupont MD100

2024 Dupont MD100

Maurice Dupont has long been one of the most respected luthiers in France and one of the first contemporary makers to specialize in producing the Selmer Maccaferri guitar. Maurice first gained recognition as a builder of classical guitars and in 1989 was bestowed with the honor of "Best French Craftsman." Maurice was an apprentice of the legendary Gypsy guitar maker Jacques Favino, and in 1986 he began building his own Selmer style guitars which quickly became the most popular choice of professional Gypsy guitarists. Countless Gypsy stars including Raphael Fays, Biréli Lagrène, Tchavolo Schmitt, and Romane have played Dupont guitars which appear on hundreds of recordings.

Dupont's Gypsy models are built entirely in Cognac, France by master luthier Patrick Redureau (since1994)  under the supervision of Maurice Dupont. The collective experience of the Dupont team along with Maurice's stock of well aged, select tonewoods yields instruments of unsurpassed tone and playability.

The MD100 is the sapele version of Dupont's best selling MD50 model. The basic guitar is the same as the MD50, with the only differences being a satin finish and the wood choices: French spruce top, beautiful quilted sapele back and sides, and a mahogany neck.

The setup on this guitar is particularly nice, with the action sitting at a very low 2.8mm. It's an easy player with a fast neck and a smooth, low tension feel. Perfect for those looking to execute some of this genre's more difficult techniques.

This example has a very clear and direct tone, with excellent highs and loads of volume. It's astounding Maurice can build a guitar in this price range with the looks, playability, and sound that this guitar possess. Most bang for the buck!

Dupont MD 100

Originally, when I started looking for an acoustic gypsy jazz guitar in the Selmer/Maccaferri style, I had planned on purchasing a quality student instrument in the $500 to $1,500 range as I am a relative newbie having focused on classical guitar for 50 years and some straight ahead jazz on an Eastman Archtop over the past several years. So, it was a bit of a splurge for me to purchase the Dupont and I immediately feared that I would receive it and experience some buyers remorse if it didn't meet my expectations. Happily, I couldn't be more pleased with this high quality instrument. Not only is the craftsmanship impeccable on this tight, flawless instrument but the neck and action are wonderful and the sound is gorgeous -- very balanced with crisp but full sounding trebles with great sustain and the right amount of punch and growliness in the bass strings. I also very much appreciated Michael's availability and thoughtful input in making the decision to buy this guitar -- thank you!
