Here is a wonderful long scale oval hole guitar by the illustrious Vancouver, B.C. builder Michael Dunn. This very experienced and capable luthier has a career that stretches back to the late 60s. As far as anyone knows, Michael was the first North American luthier to make Selmer inspired guitars.
While Michael's instruments are clearly based on Mario Maccaferri's original designs, they are much more than mere copies. Always unique, Michael's guitars are a breath of fresh air in the very conservative world of Selmer guitars. His willingness to experiment with materials, design, and aesthetics appeals to those looking for something different.
Touted as "the most sophisticated guitar on the planet," this beautiful Ultrafox model is the only Selmer style guitar that combines an internal resonator with an oval soundhole. It has a long 670mm scale, 14 fret neck, and a large 16 1/2" body. The top is cedar, the back, sides, and headstock veneer are highly figured Cocobolo with sapwood accents, and the neck is walnut. This guitar features beautiful ebony binding and fingerboard, a unique asymmetrical heel, rosewood bridge with ebony saddle, Sperzel machine heads, and "bridged" moustache pieces which reduce dampening. A soundport is located in the upper treble bout which acts as a "monitor" by directing some of the sound back to the player.
Acoustically this is one of the best, if not the best Dunn guitar I've come across. It has an exceptionally strong voice with gentle highs and thick mids. Very complex and open in tone and among the loudest Gypsy guitars you can find. Very impressive with lots of "Wow" factor to it!
