A wonderful guitar, fully fitting Michael's webpage description of the sound - I've owned and played many Gibson archtops across most decades from the 30s onwards and this L4 is exceptional from the point of view of tone, register balance, playability and condition. Many thanks - this will certainly be my "go to" instrument. First rate and efficient service from Michael at Djangobooks.com.

1989 Gibson Custom Shop L-4 CES

1989 Gibson Custom Shop L-4 CES
This well preserved example of Gibson's classic L-4 model was built in Gibson's Custom Shop and inspected and signed by the renowned luthier James W. Hutchins. The comfortable 16" body and the ergonomic 24 3/4" scale length give this guitar a buttery, easy playing feel. It's especially well suited for Johnny Smith type chord-melody playing as left hand stretches are a breeze.

This model features a solid carved Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck, and an ebony fingeboard. Hardware includes an art deco style tailpiece, a pair of gold humbucking pickups, and a set of Gibson deluxe tuners.

Tonally, this guitar is a standout with a warm, rounded high end and a full, juicy midrange. The twin humbuckers beautifully reproduce the subtleties of this solid topped instrument resulting in a sublime amplified sound. Having matured for over twenty years, every note is sweet and clear, qualities that are rarely found in younger instruments.

The condition is excellent, with only a few small dings and some mild fret wear.
