"....there are also encounters which make the difference, like with Maurice Dupont, a stringed-instrument maker in Cognac who deserves to be more widely known. He does beautiful work and, above all, knows how to listen and adapt to the needs of each musician. Thanks to him, I think I finally have the guitar that fits my personality. The relation with the instrument is fundamental. What is most important is to find one's identity, one's own sound, not to lose what you have inside you, all the things that you want to express..."
Maurice Dupont did his apprenticeship under Jacques Favino, and is
therefore the only living luthier, other then JP Favino, who has the
skills and knowledge to build a true Jacques Favino style guitar.
Maurice even used the original Favino molds to make the body! To my
knowledge, this is the only Favino Maurice has ever built under his own
name.
The sound is pure old school Jacques Favino. It has the classic "honky"
Favino high end, a lack of mids, and a much deeper low end then
Selmers.
Here's a sound sample from the Moreno Bolero CD: Moreno Playing La Gitane
In fact, this guitar has the deepest, tightest low end I've ever heard
on a Gypsy style guitar. In most cases too much bass response causes
Gypsy type guitars to become weak and ill defined. This guitar manages
to provide a rich low end without compromising it's cutting lead sound.
Incredible! I love playing Django's solo pieces on this guitar....the
wide frequency response you get with this guitar is so much more
fulfilling than you'd get with most Selmers which sound small and harsh by
comparison.
The guitar comes with two bridges. The one Moreno used is quite high
but gives the guitar that "old school" Gypsy sound that you hear in the
playing of Tchan Tchou or Tchavolo Schmitt. No matter how hard you hit
the strings, they will not crap out. They just keep giving more and
more tone and volume. It also has a lower bridge which makes the guitar
much easier to play. Using this bridge takes a little "honk" out of the
high end, giving the guitar a more balanced, modern sound. It is very
easy to play with the lower bridge, yet has no fret buzz.
The dimensions are classic Favino: 16 3/4" wide, 4" deep.
675mm scale.
The back, sides, and neck are gorgeous Solid European Maple and the top
is Spruce.
This guitar was also owned by the accomplished rhythm player Ted
Gottsegen.
The guitar is in excellent condition with no cracks or dings at all.
Looks like it has less then 100 hours of playing on it.
