Hey everyone,
My wife and I are going to NYC for a week, leaving tomorrow morning (June 4).
Where should we go to see good jazz? what about good gypsy jazz?
Are there any great guitar stores that have selmacs in the city?
We are quite excited!
thanks,
shega

Yes there is gypsy jazz, though not a lot of guitars (rudys, and carmine st and perhaps umanov's have guitars, usually one each or so). I am playing with paul Brady at the empire rooftop on monday night at 6.30-9.30, in the empire hotel in midtown (you'll need to call- its somewhat exclusive). Alex simon has a sunday gig at hotel delmonico, and a monday gig at PDT. . . both great spots to see bands and gypsy jazz in particular. Also, stephane Wrembel is usually playing, but I belive he is out of town- check him out at his site and see.
Finally, My band is looking for places to play this weekend is likely out; but some time later in the month or next month we will be playing.

Every Sunday: the Earregulars at the Ear Inn - these guys are amazing. A bunch of top notch NY trad jazz session guys led by Matt Munesteri who get together here once a week:

Every Tuesday: Mona's Hot Four late night jam 11-2am at Mona's in the east village. The younger trad jazz guys hang here and they are all smokin'. Gordon Webster on piano is jaw-dropping.

Also, you simply must hear Tamar Korn sing. She has a group called the Cangelosi Cards. Fridays at Moto in Brooklyn:

Slavic Soul Party performs every Tuesday at Barbes Brooklyn. They are gypsy/balkan brass band who play some crazy arrangements of a wide variety of gypsy and even pop songs.
