Pickup System for D-500

Hi folks. One of my guitars is a Gitane D-500. It happens to be one of the
5% that come off the assembly line that actually is pretty good (many are
crap). It sounds really loud and bright acoustically which is why I bought
it.

I installed a Schatten Design HFN-2 selmer/mac pickup system in it and and
have been using a pre-amp with it (Ultrasound DI Plus). I run the pre-amp
either through a Fender Acoustasonic amp or directly into my PA (small
bar/practice size one .. I haven't played any hockey arenas lately) .

I find the sound to be really awful with this setup and I can't determine
why. It is not full sounding and almost sounds compressed like it is in an
air chamber. If I run my Taylor 314-CE through the same DI/AMP ... it sounds
great, so I think it is the pickup system.

Wondering if anyone out there with experience with acoustic jazz guitars can
make a recommendation on a configuration using this equipment or a
recommendation on a different pickup that would sound a little fuller like
it does when not plugged in ....

I've got almost the same setup: Gitane D500, Schatten HFN-2 for selmac, but I run it through a Schertler Unico. Sounds great!

Maybe your Schatten wasn't installed properly?
