I'm hoping someone can audit my plan and LMK if there is any essential Django that I'd be missing out on. As I'm sure you know, sometimes it's a little difficult to tell what's what, given that everything seems to be a compilation and that he recorded so many versions of the same tunes:

What I already have:

The "Djangology" 10-CD boxed set [not to be confused with the 20-disc Djangologie collection], which as far as I can tell (based on this discography), has virtually all recordings Django made between early 1936 (I'se a Muggin) and late 1948 (To Each His Own- Symphonie) - so I'm all set with this time period.

What I need to get?:

It looks like the "Classic Early Recordings in Chronological Order" would nicely fill out some early years (the last CD overlaps with my other boxed set, but at $15 for 5 CD's on Amazon, I'm not too worried about it)

"Django in Rome" boxed set: this seems like a no-brainer to pick this one up, right?

"Postwar Recordings 1944-1953" - I'm a bit unsure about this because it overlaps significantly with my Djangology set, and seems like it may also overlap with the Rome recordings? Any comments on this one?

"Musette to Maestro 1928-1937" - this one seems like it overlaps quite a bit with the other early recordings I'd have. And, although I find Django's early banjo recordings interesting, I don't necessarily see myself listening to them a whole lot. Anything I'm missing here?

Anything else that I should be looking at? Thanks for all feedback and suggestions!

Also, if anyone knows of a "more ethical than Amazon" place that has these available, please let me know that as well.

There's a guitar festival coming in October and this year both Stochelo & Mozes and Antoine Boyer are booked. 😦 Oh boy what I'm gonna do. The tickets are quite pricey (for me at least) but I haven't met this kind of opportunity in a long time. If I have to pick one I'll go with Stochelo but something tells me that Antoine will be the star of this event. He's young, he's hungry, he's versatile and at the top of his game. There's a competing event that came with Diknu Schneeberger a few years ago (where I went to) but what has been spamming classical guitarists ever since. And now this. I'm stunned.

Many of us that are into Django's music may also appreciate French chansons and the music of France from the 30s-50s. On Bandcamp, there is a label called Arkadia Chansons (https://arkadiachansons.bandcamp.com/). This is Edith Piaf, Maurice Chevalier, Charles Trenet, etc. Until March 22, their catalog is 45% off if you use the code: ARKADIAFAMILY. These are items that Michael doesn't sell here, so I thought it might be of interest. If I'm off-base for posting, please feel free to delete.

They also have a straight jazz section including a Django collection, that is also included in the discount.
Hi folks, I purchased the rights to the Stochelo Rosenberg videos originally published by HyperHip Media.

For those who don't know, I was the producer of those videos , but that was the extent of my involvement. HyperHip is a complete separate business from mine. They're no longer doing this stuff, so I purchased the rights to the videos.

I will be re-issuing them sometime in November, and transcriptions will be added eventually. I've already finished transcribing all lesson examples.

The good news is that they will be a whole lot cheaper than ever before, and the even better news is that on the day of release for a very short period of time, they will be on super sale. This is because I know that many people bought the DVDs already and I don't want anyone to feel ripped off. However, because Hyper Hip was not my business, I don't have access to sufficient detailed sales info, and it would take me days if not months to work out the logistics of getting everyone who already purchased the DVDs access to everything. Furthermore, I paid a pretty hefty price to acquire the rights to these videos. So I hope this compromise is OK for most people.

All this to say, that for a very short period of time, these videos will be on MASSIVE discount: 9.99$ Canadian (roughly 7 US or 7 euros) per volume. Each volume has 20 songs that will be transcribed. The second volume has the 8 waltzes. When I have time, I can add the backing tracks to the waltzes.

I will announce the release date shortly, most likely sometime in the second week of November or so.

I am very happy to now have the trinity of GJ on my website: Bireli, Angelo, and Stochelo! And of course, Adrien Moignard, Yorgui Loeffler, Tcha Limberger, Sebastien Giniaux, Antoine Boyer, etc. etc.

I came across this on Spotify and it's been my go-to for in the car listening lately. Great compositions, laid back feel. They actually make a great case for down tempo swing and show how it can still drive and groove at pulled back tempos. I like the guitar playing a lot. Violin is a show stopper. Rhythm section does an excellent job. Our own @bopster , Paul, provides the engine for that vehicle. He's been taking lessons from Dave Kelbie for several years now. He sounds really good. I have always heard/read the name of Tchan-tchou Vidal, in the forums and on the videos and was aware of his influence/repertoire but I'd never actually heard him really until now and all I can say is WOW.

This album is amazing, its recorded perfectly, It feels like your at the gig and listening live. Its also quite interesting to hear drums on this genre, I really enjoy the different vibe you get with it.

I got the digital download on amazon for just $7.99! Michael may sell the CD here, I'm not certain.

http://www.amazon.com/La-gitane-Gypsy-J ... s_ep_dpi_1

From café terraces to musette ballrooms, jazz clubs to the most prestigious stages in Europe and America, Django Reinhardt has never ceased to dazzle the world with his guitar.

Although less familiar to the general audience, the tracks gathered and remastered here are among the finest proofs of the guitarist’s genius and extraordinary adaptability, probably the only jazzman to have evolved so brilliantly from swing to be-bop without ever compromising his artistic identity.

Backed by the first generation of French boppers, benefiting from modern recording techniques and a perfectly mastered amplified guitar sound, Django Reinhardt reached his peak as an improviser, virtuoso and composer : personal explorations of the blues (Deccaphonie), avant-garde compositions (Anouman), bop interpretations standards (Fine and Dandy, Crazy Rhythm...), french songs (Le soir, Chez moi...) and his own standards like Nuages or Manoir de mes rêves which are masterpieces.

Glory was once again reaching out to him thanks to the Blue Star sessions of March 1953, produced by Eddie Barclay at the request of Norman Granz who wanted to invite him to the USA to join the legendary Jazz at the Philharmonic tours. Alas, he will pass away shortly after these recordings at 43.
