Although a non-Gypsy from a Sephardic Jewish family, he excelled\nat the music of Django Reinhardt. Nedjar&#8217;s knowledge and proficiency in\nthe traditional Django style earned him the respect of the upper\nechelon\nof Gypsy musicians. He performed with Babik Reinhardt, Jacques\nMontagne, <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.djangobooks.com\/archives\/2005\/04\/01\/tchan_tchou_live_montpellier_1989_la_gitane.html#000257\">Tchan\nTchou Vidal<\/a>, and Stephane Grappelli. He appeared at the\nSamois-sur-Seine Django Reinhardt festival in 1968.<br>\n<br>\nThis audio clip was recorded live in 1969. It demonstrates his purist\napproach to Django&#8217;s music.<br>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.djangobooks.com\/archives\/nedjar_micro.mp3\">MP3: <i>Micro<\/i><\/a>\n<br>\n<br>\n<br>\nBy the early 1970s Nedjar had grown weary of the life of a professional\nmusician. The story goes that one night he choose a medium tempo song\nto end the set. His accompanists suggested that they play the song\nfaster since they were only being paid to play for two more minutes.\nHis sense of musical integrity was deeply offended by such a\nsuggestion. He was there to create art, but his accompanists where just\npunching the clock. This incident was a watershed event for him. It\nsymbolized his frustration with the difficulties of trying to make it\nas a musician. Shortly thereafter, he\nended his career as a professional guitarist and entered the family\nbusiness.<br>\n<br>\nOver 30 years later, Nedjar has returned once again to professional\nmusic. During his absence, Philippe expanded his musical palette to\ninclude American style be-bop. It shows his incredible evolution\nfrom a Django purist to a sophisticated bebop improviser.
