PHIL JONES BASS
We looked to see if there are any ways that we could add to the Briefcase's already stellar performance. This is the Briefcase on Stdroids called the Ultimate!
First we designed a more powful amplifier from 100 to 200 watts. In order for the two 5″ speakers to handle this we had to totally redesign a completely new 5″ driver, no small feat considering that we have already been pushing the envelope in bass transducers. The new speaker not only has a larger and more efficient motor (it is 2 dB louder!), it also has better high and low frequency performance.
We changed out the vent and replaced it with "RALFR" technology we put into the Double 4 BG-75. The result is richer, deeper, more tuneful and organic bass.
We kept the battery function here, this amp has all the bells and whitles of the original Briefcase. Thanks to the super efficient class D power amplification, the battery has the same duration of running time.
This amp will put out 150 watt on its own internal 8 Ohm speakers, and can provide 200 watts output with an external 8 Ohm speaker.
Perfect fit for my small church gig
Pros: Exceptional tone and build quality. Battery power option is more useful than I imagined.
Cons: Expensive. Don't expect to play this next to a drum kit.
I bought this last month without ever having seen one in person, based on the many positive reviews of the sound quality--the only complaint I ever read was "it's too quiet" Indeed, it cannot compete with a drum kit, but it is perfect for folks who have gigs in smaller venues. This is a good fit for upright bass or a piano-bass combo (my wife and I). I didn't think I would use the battery feature much, but as it turns out, I play it off the battery all of the time. When I practice with my wife, I carry my Phil Jones Ultimate Briefcase up to where her piano is and start playing without worrying about power. Since my church gig is only 10 songs or so, I play the whole time on battery, eliminating one more cord on the platform. The build quality is superb, and the sound is crystal clear; equal in fit and finish to my wife's Yamaha baby grand. With the optional battery installed it is a heavy little box, about the size of an old tower-style PC, but heavier. The handle is in the right place, and it doesn't knock against my legs when I walk, so it is much easier to work with than the more typical 1x10 amps in this space.
