This new Gitano de Luxe Pommelé D hole by Stefan Hahl represents the ultimate in contemporary Selmer guitar design. Most builders today obsessively try to replicate the design and building techniques of "golden era" guitars like the original Selmers, Busatos, and later Favinos. Hahl has dared to be different by using the Selmer design, which he has studied extensively, as a starting point for something new and unique. His guitars characteristically combine the complexity, warmth, and listenability of archtops and flatops with the punch and clarity of Selmers. The real genius of his work is that he has succeeded in making a contemporary, sophisticated sounding Gypsy guitar without loosing the essence of the Selmer sound. Others have tried to make such a guitar, but the end result is that warmth and complexity are traded for clarity and punch, which results in a very muted and dull sounding guitar. Not so with Hahl. His guitars produce notes with a rounded, satisfying tone but are still springy enough to shoot out of the instrument in volume challenged situations.

Hahl's work has been well received by the very finest Gypsy guitarists today. Most notably, by Bireli Lagrene who owns three Hahl guitars and has used them on most of his recent recordings. check out: Move, Just the Way You Are, To Bi or Not to Bi, and Live in Paris.

Gypsy legends Stochelo Rosenberg, Dorado Schmitt and Hono Winterstein also play Hahl guitars.

This special model features the same 60 year woods that Hahl usually reserves only for his most expensive models like the Super de Luxe. So this special Gitano de Luxe model has the same tonal "engine" as Hahl's premiere models but at a lower cost. The 60 year aged cedar top produces an absolutely huge, pianistic wash of sound that yields orchestral like chords and sweet, modern sounding leads. It is a true "modern" Gypsy guitar, with the ability to sound like George Benson playing Carnegie Hall at one moment and downright nasty a la Gypsy campfire the next. Not only does this instrument sound new and modern, it also plays more like a contemporary archtop than a Gypsy guitar. The low action, short scale, and low string tension give it a buttery, slinky feel that is more akin to an easy playing electric guitar than a typical "athletic" Gypsy setup.

All in all, this one of Hahl's best instruments to date. Treat yourself to something special, you won't be disappointed!

2016 Hahl Gitano de Lux

For my taste the is the the most shocking and finest new guitar I have ever played. In this age of luthiery we have countless options and many great pieces to choose from and this one stands above. I am fortunate to have the chance to regularly play guitars from almost every major builder in this style in addition to a a good number of old Selmers and Busatos. Most of the time the differences are minor. I have played several Hahls but this takes the cake. Why is it different? I don't know, but the nuance of the flesh of your thumb, the overtones that rest stroke plectrum playing produces, the separation of the chord voices, the clarity and resonance of single lines...all of it is over the moon. This guitar sounds like the best examples of the old instruments at less than 1/2 the cost. I myself can't justify the $ since it would not be disposable income for me...for those of you who can...BUY THIS!!!!
