1934 Selmer Petite Bouche Transitional Model

1934 Selmer Petite Bouche Transitional Model
This is it, the guitar that started it all! Vintage Selmer guitars have been studied for decades by the best luthiers in the world, but one has yet to create a guitar with the tonal refinement and projection of a vintage one such as this. Only the perfect mix of old world luthiery, select woods, and over fifty years of age can yield the astounding tone and projection that this instrument posses.

This pre-war example was built sometime around 1934. A pre-war Selmer of any kind is extremely rare, but this example is one of the select few "transitional models" that Selmer built right after Macccaferri left the company. This model features the unique configuration of an oval soundhole with a short scale, 12 fret neck. This model was made most famous by Django in the legendary J'Attendrai video.

At only 3.6 lbs, this instrument is one of the lightest we've ever had in the shop! It's featherweight construction is certainly an important factor in the impressive tone and projection this instrument produces.

This one is really a dream come true as it has everything you could ever want in a vintage Selmer: Excellent condition, outstanding tone and projection, and the easy playability you'd expect of a contemporary instrument.

Tonally, this instrument is simply outstanding! We've had quite a few Selmer guitars here over the years, but none have the refinement of tone and solid projection that this one possess. The balance is nearly perfect, with gently rounded highs, lush, full mids, and a warm, defined bass register. It is a forgiving guitar, making nearly anything you play (mistakes included) sound so, so good!

The hardware is all original and in excellent condition.

The condition is excellent, with the most noteworthy repair being a top crack on the treble side of the top that was cleated a long time ago. The lining is kerfed (unusual for a Selmer guitar, it appears to be original) and some of the lining was replaced over the years. A nail was driven into the headstock, just above Selmer logo (possibly an attempt to secure the veneer to the headstock?) There is an original label within the guitar but the serial number has been obscured.

This instrument is in wonderful playing condition, with easy playing 3mm action and new frets. Calton flightcase included

This is an incredible opportunity to own a Selmer guitar that is exemplary in both its condition and sound. A once in a decade, perhaps once in a lifetime opportunity!

THE ONE

Any fan of this music has seen the iconic video & heard the beautiful interplay between Django & Grappelli...after playing this guitar i had to put my cloths in the laundry as if i was sitting in that smokey room playing cards with the band. It should be required before trying this instrument the potential owner learns the Django intro because this what must be played first when picking up this specimen. The sound of the aged wood is what you would expect but only truly cognize when you actually are playing an aged instrument such as this. This one tells the story of train rides, hotel rooms, sweaty nights on the bandstand, a maybe even a session or two played by and with a certain someone?? One can only dream, but the goosebumps told me enough of the story. I hope whatever collector purchases this piece of history will be generous and put it in the hands of the small handful of players with the technique & sensitivity to record or perform with this instrument..This guitar is like an original painting tucked away in an estate only to be traded behind closed doors, while the recreated paintings (like our finest and esteemed luthiers best instruments today) are hanging in the worlds museums for all to see...while these paintings are more than passable, and even indescernible from the orginals they can never replace the history that once was....if your crazy enough to try and own history don't hesitate :)
