This wonderful instrument was handmade by Claude Patonotte in Mirecourt, France. Mirecourt has long been one of France's most important centers for lutherie, with Patenotte being one of the oldest and most highly regarded builders of Selmer style guitars. Claude retired a few years ago, ending a long and successful career with no heir or successor to continue production. As a result, these unique instruments are no longer available. This pristine example is about as close as you could get to obtaining a new one. It is in near mint condition, with only a few small scratches and dings on the top and body.

The very comfortable body features a 16 1/8" lower bout that is 3 5/8" deep. Those who find typical long scale Gypsy guitars difficult to play will appreciate the shorter 645mm scale length which allows long stretches and difficult chord shapes to be played with ease. At one point a 9th fret dot was added but was later removed.

Soundwise this guitar is quite special! This instrument doesn't suffer from the problems that plague so many lesser guitars: excessive overtone ringing, muddiness, lack of projection, thinness of tone, etc. Rather, it is very rich and thick in tone with enough projection to fill the room. It has the sort of tonal character that you never find in factory made guitars, which sound dull and lifeless by comparison. It's focus is in the mids, which growl with attitude while the highs are nicely rounded and pleasing. This instrument responds particularly well when played with a heavy pick and attack in the traditional Gypsy style. The more you give it, the more you get. All in all, a fantastic deal for a French handmade guitar!
