If you had have never heard of Grapelli or Reinhardt, this record would still be in one of the higher echelons of the jazz directory, this triple album is superb. It has been my personal go-to album for the past couple of years. There are a few reasons why. First of all, these guys are as tight musically in a recording situation as you will hear, but this is not a quintette, these guys have swapped and changed, vibraphone in one, piano and drums in another. To think you know gypsy swing history just because you’ve heard Django Reinhardt is to forget - and underrate - the essential legacy of the Ferret brothers, whose own authentic saga unfolded in parallel with Reinhardt’s contribution. Pierre Lafargue allows us to discover this history in a 3 CD set with a 48 pages booklet.

Ferret Magic

If you had have never heard of Grapelli or Reinhardt, this record would still be in one of the higher echelons of the jazz directory, this triple album is superb. It has been my personal go-to album for the past couple of years. There are a few reasons why. First of all, these guys are as tight musically in a recording situation as you will hear, but this is not a quintette, these guys have swapped and changed, vibraphone in one, piano and drums in another. Which leads to point 2, the versatility of the arrangements, and content go from Mozart, to dark gypsy, to waltz to musette to Wes Montgomery and back again. Thirdly, the virtuosity of the family, while listening at first you are are checking as to who is playing what where, and eventually you begin to recognise individual styles, some wonderful stuff in there. If you are a gypsy jazz fan, here is the reason why you should have this album, you know when you want to relax and listen to some good old style manouche yet your only options are the 15 Django cd's you've acquired through the years, yet you cannot mentally switch off listening to the men. How did they do that, must learn that lick etc...The Ferret guys are a 9 to Django's 10, you can put it on, listen to some excellent manouche...get some new ideas, and keep the buzz of a dinner party high. top drawer collection, seal of approval assigned
